What's in the Details

This week director Jonathan H. finished blocking with groups. Carlos worked with the ensemble on making language more real, more impactful and more active. Master teacher J. Steven White worked on fight scenes with both groups.

Now that the play is blocked student artists must work on adding details: illuminating their words and the story of the play with their thoughts and minds; engaging physically to tell the story through their bodies as well and using their imaginations to make crowd scenes as real as possible.

One Master Teacher at Adler has said that an artist's ability to add highly specific details to their work is directly related to their ability to live their life fully. What are student actors learning about themselves as artists and as human beings? All are invited to share their experience on this blog.

  1. What a Great Week! I had so much fun working on the fight choreography with Steve White. This week was also so helpful to me, I learned so much about the little details that will help me bring my character to life like making eye contact, importance of the way I enter or exit each scene and remembering to actually listen to what the other characters say. Also how there's are so many different ways you can say a sentence especially when emphasizing a certain word and its so much fun because you get to play with Shakespeare's words. Our teachers have been so essential in bringing Coriolanus to life, I really don't think it would be the same without them. I'm so happy to be in group B everyone has been very supportive I can't wait to see everyone again on Monday!

  2. This past week was so much fun, finishing the blocking was great. When we first went over the play Coriolanus I wasn't very interested, but as each week goes by and it starts to come along I get more and more interested ! I love the group I'm in and all the teachers who are helping us ! (:

  3. Another amazing week at Adler I can honestly say its a super helpful program. It not only improves your acting, but it also improves your personality as a person. This program is beyond good, those who are interested in acting should definetly try out for this program.

  4. This week, just like the others, was amazing. I learned so much from each of our mentors, and I learned how to apply what I learn with each of them on the play we are working in. Its so amusing how every single day I learn something new in this program, not only about acting, but I learn new things about myself too. Performing one of Shakespeare's plays is without doubt one of the most challenging thing I've done, and I'm thankful with the Stella Adler Studio, my mentors, and cast-mates for being so supportive along the entire way.

  5. We finished blocking! And now we go to class on Monday having memorized our lines so its finally starting to feel like the play is coming together. I got to work with the stage combat coach this week and it was so fun learning choreography for a fight. I'm learning so much about acting and letting go of your personality to embody something or someone different. You have to keep an open mind to succeed in acting.

  6. This week was awesome as usual. I'm learning that Shakespeare's words are so deliberate and meaningful. I've also learned that my intent is just as important as my speech. Entrances, exits and cues are the super glue that holds ANY play together and that's another part of intention that we explored. Fight choreography with Steve White was great! I'm so thankful to be one of the cast mates that got an opportunity to work with him. I've also taken a lot from this weeks voice and speech time with Emily and warm-ups with Carlos. I love that I have so many mentors that believe in me and know that not only am I capable, but I am smart and should never fear how great I can be. And its great to work with cast mates that feel the same empowerment I do, Thank you Stella Adler

  12. The first day of our last week of classes, If I say I'm not nervous I would be lying .. But it's fantastic how we got to do something that would take a year to be done .. In just 5 weeks .. I can now say I have experience in acting .. And I'm not the same actresses as I was before .. The camp .. Before I was 30% of an actor and now i can tell I'm a 90% .. Because you're always growing in the acting journey..
